They made a bet... 5 years later... He proved her wrong.
When I was 19, I moved to Portland with a lot of baggage, need for opportunity, and the anxiety of being on my own for the first time. With a few hoops to jump through and God’s ultimate plan.. I met this wild beautiful lady, Kendra. She was new to the city as I was, needed a fresh start as for I, and we both had hearts that needed to be mended. I was her nanny and friend as well as she was my friend and my home during our tough season in our lives. I took care of her kids as she aided me in growing up. People may not understand our relationship but she will always be a part of who I am, and that makes us kindred spirits. Us being strong women we have our moments where we have butted heads…but we always come back to where it started and how much we needed each other. During my 2 or so years of working for her…she met this sweet man full of strength, humor, and utmost admiration for her. I recall the many evenings hanging out after her shifts at Bare Minerals…We always had the worst junk food, best movies, and lots of chatting about all our drama in our lives. And of course keeping me up to date on all her texts to Marvin in Michigan. She asked me one night to go with her to pick him up at the MAX as it would be the first time they had met. He was very tall with quite the smile. He sat in the back seat while I started my interrogation. I was and still quite protective of her as well as I am always game to challenge her to be the best version of herself..as some may know. Marvin was the one, he was the best with the kids, and he kept up with my sarcasm…he had gotten my vote. But because his home was in Michigan and Kendra’s strong head, there was growth that needed to happen between them. He then moved to west coast and continued to pursue her. In my chapter, I had moved away and did my own growth but then came back to Portland and worked for Kendra at Bare Minerals. She always seemed to find her way back to…”but Marvin.” Many fun, wise conversations we had in the "back-room". So here you have it, they are engaged..most in love..and quite the team God planned for.
Kendra was quite the kick at our session.. but when is she not.. wild and untamable…she knows how to make things fun.
Now Marvin, you continue to impress me with your outlook on life, your patience with her and her kids, as well as your devotion to her. Again you will always have my vote.
Kendra, you have come so far in your strength, your heart, and your belief. I am so proud of you.
What I was living for all along…
What the privilege of being yours would do….
Let’s pop some Champagne and celebrate the beginning of your dreams coming true.
Your love is my turning page.....
It was always you...
